Introduction
While scientists are busy trying to uncover signs of life from the furthest reaches of our galaxy, thousands of people here on Earth are convinced that we have already been visited by extraterrestrial beings. Hundreds of people every year report seeing unidentified flying objects(UFOs) such as flying saucers. Some even claim to have been abducted by aliens and carried into space!
Signs of life
In december 1990, the galileo probe began to investigate a planet that displayed a multitude of signs of life. This planet was Earth, and the probe was conducting a very interesting experiment : whether it is possible to detect signs of life on a planet when viewed from space. The Galileo probe detected that Earth had both water on its surface and oxygen in its atmosphere, which told scientists that this planet contained life. Any visiting life forms would also be able to detect that Earth is home to living, breathing organisms. As well as this, the Earth at night is a lighted signpost pointing alien spacecraft in our direction!
Alien life forms
Many people have claimed that alien life forms have visited Earth. Some think that superintelligent aliens landed on Earth 40,000 years ago and created human beings. Many even claim that these extraterrestrial beings returned several times to teach humans the secrets of technology so that they could build wonders such as the Great Pyramids. Nobody known that would happen if aliens did visit Earth today? In 1938, a radio adaptation of H G Well's novel The War of the Worlds led many terrified listeners to flee New Jersey, USA, because they thought it was being invaded by hostile Martians!
Some important facts
1) The term "flying saucer" was used by a farmer in Texas as far back as 1878 to describe what he thought was a UFO. The US army built its own flying saucer in the 1950s, but it barely flew!
2) Oxygen is a very reactive gas and would quickly disappear from the atmosphere if it was not constantly being replenished by living plants. Aliens detecting oxygen in the atmosphere would know there was life on Earth.
3) Earth at night is like glowing neon signpost. Lights are brightest in the big cities but can also come from burning oil wells and large fleets of boats.
