INSIDE THE SPACE STATION

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 | 7:50 PM

Introduction
Only the most optimistic of science-fiction fans at the beginning of the twentieth century believed that one day human beings could live in the Space. However, scientist have designed space stations that can sustain human life in the hostile conditions of space. Life support systems that provide air and water mean that astronauts and cosmonauts can live in space for periods longer than a year.

The MIR

The Mir Space Station, has been in orbit around the Earth since 1986 and is the longest surviving  Space Station. It is so old that nowadays most people have new cars ! It orbits around the Earth every 90 minutes at a height of 320 Km. Inside Mir the conditions are very untidy because there is not much room to move around. However, despite the cramped conditions, the Stations has been staffed continuously since 1987, with some cosmonauts on board for over a year.

The ISS

In 1998, the first module of the International Space Stations was launched, beginning the project to build the biggest ever space station. Many different countries are involved in the colossal task, and work will not finish until well after 2004. When it is complete, the space station of a football field and the night sky after Venus.

Some More Facts

1) The International space station is powered by 4,000 square meters of solar panels.

2) The International Space Station will house a crew of seven. They will live in a special habitant module with a gym, a galley and medical certificates

3) The International Space Stations will be supplied by the Space Shuttle, which will dock in order to provide food and equipment.

4) The International Space Station has a wingspan of 110 m, is over 80 m long weighs 500 tones.

Condition in Space

Conditions in Space can be very strange. There is almost no gravity inside a Space Station, which means astronauts can float in mid-air and lift heavy objects effortlessly. There is no Up or Down in space, and Astronauts can sleep on the walls or even on the sealing! This lack of gravity can be trouble some, However As scientist in space station have to strap themselves to the walls when they are working to stop themselves from floating away because muscles do not have to fight against the gravity in Space, they can waste away, which means that astronauts must exercise everyday. There is no proper day and night on the space station.
